Cover Design
First place
Henry Clay High School
This cover does a great job of introducing and conveying the theme with a pleasing design and good use of graphics. The color scheme is beautiful and cohesive.
Second place
North Hardin High School
This cover does a great job of introducing the theme, but the all-black background is a little somber. The double meaning of the "FYI" letters is very creative, and the letters inside the boxes further convey the "Find Yourself Inside" theme.
Third place
duPont Manual High School
This cover is creative, but it could use more color. The slanted photo does a good job of conveying the theme "Slant," but either a color photo or the black and white photo on a color background would have been more eye-catching.
Writing Style
First place
duPont Manual High School
There is good writing throughout this yearbook, with great storytelling, research and quotes. The whole spread tells the story with headlines, stories and captions. The writing is consistent across all sections. There are a few minor mistakes.
Second place
Barren County High School
This yearbook has good writing and good storytelling. Good job of conveying the setting and bringing the reader into the story. There is some opinion in some stories. The headlines need to be more descriptive, more than just a phrase. The captions and quotes are good. In the "Grow" section, the readability of the stories was negatively affected by the black text on the dark maroon box. There are a few errors as well.
Third place
Henry Clay High School
This yearbook has a solid writing style, but needs improvement. Some stories are creative, but some stories are bland; they don't grab the reader. On the plus side, the captions and quotes help to tell the story, and each spread tells a unified story. There are redundant places in the writing. More research could be done, and strengthen the transitions before quotes.
Overall Yearbook Design
First place
North Hardin High School
This design is a lot of fun and shows a lot of creativity. I like the bright colors and the many cutouts. The photos are great, and the variety of quotes from students and profiles are great. Some spreads are a little overdone, a little too garish. Have fun, but don't go overboard. The name of section needs to be more prominent than the theme on divider pages. The theme doesn't need to be so prominent or repeated twice; your reader already knows what it is.
Second place
Graves County High School
This design is well organized, and the color schemes are well used. Good job of making each section distinct, yet part of the whole. I like the way the "and then..." theme is highlighted in the quotes at the bottom of the pages. Good folios on sides always tell you where you are. The divider pages are good, but exactly the same. Let the photos determine the design, instead of forcing the photos to fit the same template for each one. The photos are jumbled too close together on the dividers, and the borders are too heavy. Be more consistent with your font use. There are too many. Watch out for black caption text over dark photos.
Third place
Henry Clay High School
The design had a nice font, great photos and good headlines. Nice checkerboard graphic throughout. Nicely laid out portrait sections. I like the poll questions throughout. Watch out for black text over dark colors or photos. The spreads were very consistent, but perhaps too consistent. Try for more variety and creativity in your layouts.
Theme Development
First place
North Hardin High School
The theme is easily identified by not only the words, but also the placement of the words inside the boxes on the cover. It is well carried throughout the book through the use of headlines, the "inside numbers" boxes and the copy on the divider pages.
Second place
Henry Clay High School
The theme is well identified on the cover and through the use of headlines and the way the book is organized. However, more could be done, such as theme-related pull-out boxes with numbers or quotes from students.
Third place
Graves County High School
The theme is well explained in the opening and is conveyed in the divider pages. It is also well used in the Summer section in the quotes at the bottom of each page. It is not as evident in the rest of the sections. Make the theme more prominent in all sections for more consistency.
Use of Graphics
First place
North Hardin High School
Each graphic stands out, is easy to see, and enhances the spread. Color bars are nicely used at the tops of spreads and in other places. "Inside numbers" boxes are clear and easy to read and keep consistent with the color scheme. The color bar on the "Typical Trojan Day" spreads is especially nice. The T-shirt spread is also great, especially considering the time it must have taken to cut out all of the photos on page 32. Nice pulled quotes and graphics are used in the portrait sections. Some spreads would pop much better without backgrounds, such as "School of Rock" and "Find Yourself in the Stands." Some spreads are garish, such as the "You have to take this class."
Second place
duPont Manual High School
Nice use of arrow motif and slanted boxes. Nice slanted quote graphics at bottoms of pages. Some pages, such as the "What makes Louisville Louisville" and the Senior Superlatives are jumbled and confusing, and the graphics don't stand out as well as they could. I like the way words become graphics for the pull-out quotes, such as Upside Downside, At the Crossroads, and Answers From All Angles. The Clubs Index and Sports Index pages have a lot of graphics and information but they are well laid out.
Third place
Graves County High School
Very creative graphics are used throughout this book, but you need more consistency in design and fonts, within and between sections. The quote boxes at the bottom of Summer section pages are good. The red color bars behind the pulled quotes make some of the text hard to read. Graphics in Fall section need more consistency in design, but not necessarily put in the same place on every spread. Some quote boxes are oval (always in the top right corner), and some are boxes with rounded corners (always in the bottom right corner). Pick a design and a font and stick with it, but move them around on different spreads. In the Winter section, you have yet another design for quote and numbers boxes. Some are square corners and some are rounded. Sports records are nicely done.
Yearbook Photography
First place
North Hardin High School
There are a lot of great photos, with a lot of candid expressions that are fun to look at. Dominant photos are well-chosen and show good action. A lot of cut-outs make the photos fun. Pop-out color effects are well-used. Some spreads show too many sides of faces and backs of heads. Take and choose photos that show faces as much as possible.
Second place
duPont Manual High School
There are a lot of great photos in this yearbook. They show great expression and action. Dominant photos are well chosen, and I like the candid expressions for the photos with quote boxes at the bottoms of pages. It is more interesting than a straight-on mug shot. Sometimes there are too many jumbled together, which give the reader too many to look at. Use fewer photos to let the great ones stand out. Sometimes a cutout will be floating in the middle of a design very close to another photo, obscuring its effect. Make cutouts more purposeful -- use them to enhance a design, not just because you can.
Third place
Henry Clay High School
Great choices of dominant photos. Each shows good action and expression. Small photos are also good, but static design keeps some of them from really standing out. It also limits the number and variety of photos you can use.
Advertising Section
First place
Oldham County High School
This ad section is nicely designed and easily readable. The ads are well placed with a good balance of different sizes and color. There are errors in some ads, and a few ads have photos or logos pixilated. Random photos appear in some places with no explanation. If these are extra photos to fill space, they need captions.
Second place
duPont Manual High School
The senior ads are well designed, with nice space between ads and photos. I like the person's name on the largest photo. The ads could use a solid box around them to block them off from other ads, but that isn't too confusing.
Third place
North Hardin High School
There is good space between ads, but too much color on the senior ads. They compete with each other. Use some white backgrounds, then color for emphasis. Give the reader's eye a rest. The business ads are better balanced on color.
Overall Coverage
First place
North Hardin High School
A great diversity of topics is covered. Many students appear in the yearbook through quotes in boxes or in photo captions. Many student opinions are captured in the "inside numbers" boxes. Profiles throughout the People section not only relieve the boredom of page after page of protraits, but also include more diversity.
Second place
duPont Manual High School
There is a great diversity of topics, and good job of including topics that impact students' lives outside of school. This yearbook includes a lot of pull-out quote boxes from a variety of students, but they are often presented in a jumbled or garish manner that is distracting. The Answers From All Angles boxes are a good way to include more students in the book. The quotes at the bottoms of pages are also good. Make the design neater and cleaner, but keep the great coverage.
Third place
Graves County High School
There are a lot of quote boxes, poll questions and quotes from students. Some pages could use more, though. The survey and poll boxes in the People section are good, but use more throughout the book. All of the sections include a good diversity of topics. The Summer and Winter sections do the best job of making the topic obvious in the headlines. However, headlines in Fall section should make story topics more obvious. I sometimes had to look at the folio to see what it was about.
