YEARBOOK CLASS AAA
Cover Design
First place
South Oldham High School
The subtlety of the bar code theme, coupled with the photo montage and good use of color, makes this cover design especially effective. Carrying the design onto the back cover also adds to its attractiveness. I'm not sure there is anything I would have done differently.
Second place
Assumption High School
The imagery used to illustrate "change" is well done -- simple but effective. Carrying that imagery onto the back cover would have given it more punch.
Third place
John Hardin High School
Although the "shadowbox" approach is a bit unoriginal, it is well done and works nicely with the "building tradition" theme. It would have been nice to see the cover design incorporate the back cover as well as the front. Also, the title is nowhere to be found on the cover!
Writing Style
First place
South Oldham High School
Interesting angles, quotes and well-researched information combine to set the writing in this book way ahead of competitors. A fresh approach to telling the stories creates interest and entices people to want to read more. Great job. (Even the headlines are creative and interesting.)
Second place
John Hardin High School
Most impressed with the variety of information and the "volume" of interesting tidbits. Even the captions are jam-packed with information. Stories focused on the usual as well of the unusual. The writing did, however, lack in creativity -- rather mundane approach to many stories.
Third place
Assumption High School
The stories reflect a fresh approach to yearbook writing. Good use of quotes to illustrate your prose. Keep searching for the unusual stories that set Assumption apart.
Overall Yearbook Design
First place
South Oldham High School
This book showcases innovative design and continuity of the theme throughout, which sets it apart. The design pulls the reader through from front to back. A couple of things detracted, however: the rounded edge photos (too scrap-booky) and the bar code stripes as a backdrop for portraits. Knowledge of basic and more developed design principles are evident.
Second place
Assumption High School
Good use of design basics -- lots of entry points, consistency and judicious use of color. Be careful with photo placement -- people "looking off the page." Section title pages nicely done. Simple yet elegant.
Third place
John Hardin High School
Loved the "clean" layout! Very easy for the reader. Some pages get a little too busy and distracting. I'm not sure I get the timeline running along the bottom of each page. What purpose does it serve? How does that tie into the theme?
Theme Development
First place
South Oldham High School
The theme was expertly carried through the book from start to finish, from page design to the page numbers. The theme itself was well thought-out, making it easy to unify every element. Recognizable throughout.
Second place
Bowling Green High School
Used a more subtle theme, but highly effective. It could have been more pervasive (i.e., used consistent elements more often). The theme, as it relates to each section, was particularly effective.
Third place
Assumption High School
Theme starts with a bang but fizzles as you work your way through. Still, it appears to be effective in helping create interest. Section opening pages are well done.
Use of Graphics
First place
South Oldham High School
There are some fairly typical graphics, but also some that are quite innovative. The different types of labels used throughout are a great example of the latter. The recurring "tear off the ... label" spreads create reader interest.
Second place
John Hardin High School
Your use of graphics is well done, though not particularly original. Photo cutouts work well. Headers, captions, etc. are consistent in nature and, therefore, very effective.
Third place
Bowling Green High School
The graphics are simple in nature but effective -- reflecting a "clean" approach that is exhibited in design and other aspects of the book. You probably could have stepped the graphics up a bit and still maintained the elegance reflected throughout the book.
Yearbook Photography
First place
South Oldham High School
While there are plenty of typical yearbook photos, there are flashes of genius -- the tattoo photo, for example. Photography is aided by expert placement and cropping.
Second place
Assumption High School
Fairly typical photo composition does not distract from the photographic quality. Strive to shoot emotion! Get up close so you can see the wrinkles on a student's face as she smiles or makes a strange face.
Third place
John Hardin High School
There appears to be fewer posed shots than in some other books, which is a good thing. Photos show emotion, which is also good. But I'd like to see more of that emotion -- more drama! Get up close when shooting -- when possible -- to portray what's happening more accurately.
Advertising Section
First place
South Oldham High School
This advertising section stands out for one reason: it draws readers into it with a running "line" of questions and answers from students throughout. Otherwise, the ads are fairly typical, although well done.
Second place
Bowling Green High School
Ads were in black and white, yet no less effective. Like the first-place book in this division, the section stands out because its uses congratulatory ads to students to bring readers in.
Third place
Assumption High School
Very colorful ad section with lots of ads (good sales job!) However, the graphic background on each page is distracting. Homeroom photos, etc., lack quality and are also distracting.
Overall Coverage
First place
South Oldham High School
I'm sounding like a broken record but this book does an excellent job of showing all aspects of student life. How could it not? The theme lends itself to nothing less. Excellent job!
Second place
John Hardin High School
This is exactly what a high school yearbook should be -- a reflection of the great diversity within school walls. You could have gone a little "deeper" to showcase some of the more hidden diversity that surely exists.
Third place
Bowling Green High School
Great care appears to have been taken in making sure all aspects of BGHS student life are covered. Next year though go deeper to uncover the greater diversity that exists there.
