Cover Design
First place
Union County High School
Original, bright, meaningful and memorable, this collage-like cover tells two stories -- the '09 school year and a celebration of their 45th anniversary. Sharp, bold colors and personal touches make this cover a standout, not to mention it is also correct with volume number, etc., on spine.
Second place
Fleming County High School
Classic design and rich details make this cover a winner. Soft suede and gold with white and black are uber sophisticated. Please, next time put volume number and school name on spine; it's vital information shelf-wise.
Third place
Belfry High School
Clever and contemporary, this litho cover's bright locker image and Sharpie writing are eye-catching. Taking a bold chance paid off. To be correct, please put volume number on the spine -- readers will appreciate it.
Writing Style
First place
Corbin High School
This book staff understands the lasting power of the printed word. Catchy and theme-related headlines, informative captions and interesting, journalistic-style stories make this book a winner. Brief stories -- yes, but packed with information and written with voice.
Second place
Highlands High School
Information-packed captions and stories lead the way in this book. Solid researched stories and captions will ensure this book's value for decades to come. Next time, consider more consistently featurized headlines and subheads that will showcase personal creativity and draw the reader in. Also, I recommend keeping stories more journalistically appropriate and objective with less first person plural, all done without compromising voice. First person is sometimes appropriate, but not always.
Third place
Estill County High School
Good job overall in headlines, stories and captions, but please take advice from Emeril and "kick it up a notch." Show more journalistic discipline and get direct quotes, facts and specifics in all copy, not just sports. Also, please be careful to remain objective. Most, not all, journalistic writing is in the third person.
Overall Yearbook Design
First place
Estill County High School
Classic, clean and correct. This design scheme showcases great photography and clean lines. Thumbnail photos and spot color headlines keep visual interest with an occasional eye-candy-popping spread. Well done.
Second place
Highlands High School
Big, bold and beautiful. Spot color and big photos kept me looking forward to the next spread. This staff took chances with color boxes and type, and almost always succeeded. I recommend that next time they avoid using color accents just for the sake of effect. Be more restrained and purposeful in all design elements so they don't clash or over-compete with photos and type.
Third place
Corbin High School
Correct and clean, but almost too cautious. Designs are classic but do not fully reflect contemporary styles. The staff could try to be more inventive by studying current magazine style and then making the ideas their own. I do appreciate their respect for photos and graphic elements, which are presented without competing too much against each other.
Theme Development
First place
Corbin High School
This staff took every advantage to unite the book around the theme. From division pages and title page to well-crafted thematic copy blocks and graphics, the Redhound theme carried successfully and thoughtfully, cleverly throughout. Well done.
Second place
Estill County High School
Fabulous endsheets reflect theme and cover. Division page design and photos do, too. Thematic copy is present but a little generic. Thematic writing should be a journalistic narrative with specific facts, events and references to current events. Although the theme itself is old hat, the staff developed it in a new way. Good job!
Third place
Highlands High School
Color and design are well thought out and very successful. The reader has lots of eye candy in thematic pages, but strong, journalistic writing is always good, too.
Use of Graphics
First place
Highlands High School
Photoshopped images on solid color or faced focus photos stood out in this field of entries. Although entries in this category were overall generic, this book was distinguished by having the most successful attempts in graphics, using spot color, color accents and photos in their overall design.
Second place
Estill County High School
Spot color, zero margin photo montages, fat quotes, and tool lines helped make this book's graphics impressive. Next time, they could consider using unique scorecards and other design elements like their fat quote ledger lines, which was visually interesting.
Third place
Corbin High School
Every spread had some graphic elements, which showed effort and thoughtfulness. Overall, this book's graphic elements were used successfully. Next time, they could keep their design within each section more consistent and avoid using tool lines or boxes for their own sake.
Yearbook Photography

Fleming County High School
Candid photos dominate, and the staff was wise to run these good photos large. Action and crisp, clear photos capture tons of fun moments at FCHS. Next time, the staff could avoid using photos in headline type because that's hard to read and sometimes ruins the photo.
Second place
Corbin High School
Okay, you got me. A black and white (mostly) book stood loud and proud, running action and not cheese on most pages. Well done -- and continue to focus on emotional, memorable and lively moment such as the one that opened the title page. I loved it.
Third place
Estill County High School
Wow! Candid photos everywhere, including the mini-montages on several spreads. Congrats for the sheer number of photos. But next time, the staff could be more selective by having fewer photos of people posing, sitting or looking as if they are. Capture more action and don't be afraid of running the best photos large.
Advertising Section
First place
Estill County High School
Restrained, consistent design, sophisticated use of font and color combine to make this ad section a pleasure to see. Well done.
Second place
Fleming County High School
Color, color, color. Photos everywhere. This ad section is fun to read and big crowd pleaser, too. Next time, consider reducing the font-over-photos and make your ad boxes and internal margins consistent. That way, the staff will have a fun and professional ad section. Good.
Third place
Union County High School
Great color and photos. I can tell lots of work went into this big ad section. Next time, the staff could consider toning down the colors, making ad boxes consistent, and limiting the number of fonts used. Doing so will unify the section and upgrade it from "great" to "classy."
Overall Coverage
First place
Highlands High School
This book shines brightest in making great coverage for everyone in the school -- athletics, clubs, performance, after school and special events all receive this staff's TLC with great stories and candid photos. I recommend the staff be more consistent, however, in sports coverage and scorecards. Well done.
Second place
Fleming County High School
Great coverage of sports and school events. Lots of coverage, fair to non-seniors -- commendable. Next time, I recommend the staff do a better job on issues and after school and non-school activities. It's all part of the students' year.
Third place
Estill County High School
Estill County and Corbin tied for third place. These two good books packed a punch in coverage -- sports, clubs, academics, student life. The only thing I can recommend is adding pages or finding some way to add more coverage of after school events, issues, school culture, more non-school events and stories.
