Wins on brevity, graphics and reading ease. Lots of information but easily referenced and digestible. Like the effect of the "sticky notes" and thumblocks. Color would have added some pizzazz to the page. Very good.

Like the commentary from adults and students, both local and state. Brings a state subject down to the local level. Perhaps could have been bolstered by a graphics box explaining the valuable components. Good graphic.

Great lead. I read more to determine why the numbers decreased. Good legwork on this story as well as quotes. It shows you were persistent. A third place in a very tough category. Liked the chart on the different consequences -- few weekly or daily papers have the space to devote to that nowadays.

Great art. Enticing story. Well presented. Gripping and a good read. Probably would have liked comments from Alex and customers at bar. A very good start. Easily a first place.

A hard-hitting national story brought down to the local scene. Good commentary from students but loses on adult feedback and graphics (pics were muddy). Might be interesting to do a repeat and see if anything has come of the situation.

Third in a tough category. The writer spent time with the performers and "got into the groove." Loses on artwork but writing style is fresh, crisp and clean. Good job.

Miller explains why he finds existing animal laws problematic. His information is well researched which gives more weight to his arguments. He also explains what changes he would support and informs the reader how they can get involved.

This is an issue that didn't exist when I was applying to colleges but I understand why Rhudy is concerned. The electronic transcripts (or lack thereof) do put students at a disadvantage. While Rhudy urges action, identifying who to contact to create the change would make this stronger.

Kelly Johnson
Johnson does a good job analyzing the controversy and explaining why it was much ado about nothing based on the actual content of the speech rather than the perception of what the speech would be.

Excellent writing. Grabs reader at the beginning and is drawn through the end. Constructive and clear -- the point of the movie's pointlessness is driven home. Nice showcasing of director information. Can get lost if included in text. Could be shorter. At times it seemed beefed up to make a certain length.

I don't like Death Cab for Cutie but I'm sold on the CD! Writer clearly has an in-depth understanding of music. Text length was a little long. Perhaps pick top three songs to write about or compare CD to others. If doing both, condense information.

Excellent and effective writing. Gives a point without completely bashing the movie. Perhaps next time consider a comparison. Thrown in some movie title or scene that was excellent to show how terrible Jennifer's Body (or the next awful movie title) is.

Definitely, the best story in class 3A -- a strong division. Writer draws reader in with vivid description of hospital room and reaction to the paralysis and keeps reader entranced throughout. Great detail about the accident and the after effects of such a tragedy. But, most importantly, the writer captured the hope of the victim.

Loved the lead. Good flow, good story but would have been stronger with more quotes from the subject.

Loved this Olympics story. Great way to introduce or school readers on the lesser-known Olympic sports. Written with great humor but still informative.

"Behind the scenes" photography always gives the reader a better understanding. Nice job getting backstage. Good competition with focus being on reflection. Costume of girl in back and items on table help show time period of play.

Great emotion and moment! Good light. A tighter crop to just the three girls (and the guy behind them) would have made this the winner.) Nice job.

Very nice, clean portrait. It looks like the boy is looking in his rearview mirror. Cutline should mention that to make photo clearer. Good work of getting him doing something other than looking at the camera.

Holy Moley. Sydney writes an incredible first-person account of a struggle with bulimia. Concise, relentless and thought-provoking. Head and shoulders above anything I've read in this judging.

Halloween calls for excitement and risk taking, especially if creating one "has-it-all" page. This did it. The headline and graphic was terrific. Be careful when slanting text boxes. While it can add to a page's theme, it can also distract readers and take away from the info. Good white space. Very bold design.

News pages can be difficult to lay out sometimes because it's primarily text. Good job using the photos to break up two very gray stories. Keep in mind photos should show faces if the people are the subjects of interest. Also, for acronyms make sure to spell them out on first references. Watch for too much white space. Good editing and tracking.

Solid writing, very strong. Good use of graphics and varied column widths. Make sure each story has a byline. Also, the page is very horizontal. Try to add a vertical appeal to the page.

This paper looks great. Masthead is simple, photos pop. I like the "What's Inside" bar at bottom of page. I might use a rule to break up stories and also stay consistent with the headline style. (One serif at top of page, the rest sans sarif.)

I like the dominant photo and overall style. I like how the first skybox photo lets you know what the story's about. Would like to see a description for other two photos. Picture and page number is not enough.

First place was no contest. The design is clean with attention to the little things. In general, good work with headlines although all caps should be reserved for hard-hitting news rather than features. Good choice of stories for front. Loved the features, especially the charity work on a budget. Too many different headline fonts inside.

Consistency elevated second place over third. Lead photo wasn't as strong as first-place entry. I'm still not keen on the variety of fonts and there's a lot of stretching and squishing. Nice variety of stories, and the features section is strong. Catchy headlines in sports though some seem a little corny. But that can be good with sports. Watch the photo toning because some came out too dark.
Third place

Staff
Kudos to a high school staff going beyond the school walls. The layout of the front felt scattered and unplanned. Perhaps consider something like an info graphic with quotes rather than mugs with quotes. Consistent headline font inside is good. Watch out for the little things while editing copy. On the front: "There is only eight months ..." Should be "are."

A very difficult area -- but the cream rises to the top! Like the short commentaries and the bulletin board effect. Very refreshing look for a high school paper. Color would add some sparkle and make the top decision very easy! Awesome!

A good illustration for a good story. Like the swirling effect of the headline and the placement of the arm in the toilet. Color would add some pizzazz to the page but I know the cost is prohibitive.
