Waggener Traditional High School
Samantha Villanueva
Really nicely done. Samantha uses multiple sources to explain the impact of various types of bullying. Though labeled as such, skip the re-enacted photo next time.
Second place
Waggener Traditional High School
Justin Anderson
This story had the whole package -- writing, graphics, photos, logical and thorough explanation of the impact of a major reorganization. No silly stuff, just straight up good writing.
Third place
Waggener Traditional High School
Hana Ateeq
Again, a solid package from Waggener. Straight reporting of an interesting story. Good use of germane quotes. Logically progresses. Nice work.

Excellent feature/opinion. This article does lean more in the direction of an editorial; however, there are many educational points. Keep up the good work.

Corbin High School
Lyndsay Williams
In breaking down the stages, you should have noted the "themes" of each -- acceptance, denial, etc.
Third place
Pike County Central High School
Sarah Singleton
Very informative piece. Would have liked a quote from a medical professional. I would have also added a quote somewhere near the start of the story -- first quote isn't until 4th graph.
Editorial Writing

Corbin High School
Brad Sears
The basic premise is likely common at many schools. Construction is inconvenient and distracting. The conclusion is also clear, this year's students should realize the construction will have long-term benefits for future students. This editorial was a bit unfocused at times. Write tighter to make the point more effectively.

Pike County Central High School
Daniel Thacker
The beginning was a bit too wordy which delayed the reader from getting to the point. Overall, however, the writer identified a problem and encouraged actions to address it. Cleaning up the opening (fewer self references) and writing tighter would make this stronger.
Third place
Corbin High School
Brad Sears
While not as strong as his first-place entry, Sears identifies an issue and proposes a solution if it arises again. At times, it was too repetitive but Sears seems to have a better understanding of what an editorial is than others who entered this category. Some don't quite get the difference between an editorial and a column. I suggest students read editorials in daily papers and compare the tone, length and focus of those writings to what was entered.
Review

Pike County Central High School
Lana Bellamy
Good synopsis of key elements of film. Good use of quotes to drive the review from one part to the next. Language usage is mature and appropriate.
Second place
Pike County Central High School
Daniel Thacker
An enthusiastic well-written thumbs-up review. Good background on band. Only downside was some bad grammar. His self rather than himself is a big no-no.
Third place
Corbin High School
Anna Pace
Loved the box, "New Moon by the Numbers." The review told potential movie-goers why this next movie in a series was worth seeing -- showed it was taken to a new level. Too many opinion quotes used from other students.

Great lead. Great use of quotes and good flow. Just one really well written story. Great job

Again, a nice lead and well written story. You do a nice job of drawing in your readers -- a good lead -- and keeping their attention.

Great job of being in the right place at the right time for the big play of the game. That takes planning on the photographer's part and that made this photo a first. Clean, peak action sports photo. Nice work.
Second place
Fleming County High School
Ellen Vice
Good work finding an interesting angle. Framing the student inside the hoola-hoop was a good idea. Clean composition.

The look on the girl's face on the right makes this photo. Action, clean background and a tight crop all add to the photo. Would be better if girl's leg wasn't cut off.

Love the 'stang! The car is the definite focal point. And if that is an indication of Dean's work, I'm sold. The photo tells the story here.
Second place
Corbin High School
Faith Medlin
Color offers a nice touch here and the purple coupon offering 10 percent off is very appealing.
Third place
Corbin High School
Alex Dixon
This photo was a good art element. It looks like everyone is having a good time. The services listed are clearly defined. I wish the phone number would have been larger.
Column
First place
Fleming County High School
Ellen Vice
Solid writing on a timely topic. Good use of examples -- good behavior in public for adults who will hire you and children who mimic their teenage role models. Strong ending with positive recommendation to "prove to community" what kind of student body you have.
Second place
Fleming County High School
Alex James
Topic of girls' sports not receiving equal support is on target. Good comparisons. Balanced reporting and good storytelling to bolster points made.
Third place
Corbin High School
Madison Barton
Balanced views on faculty/student attitudes. Good humor regarding spirit days "like 95 percent of students who roll out of bed claiming to be dressed for Bum Day."
Editorial Cartoon

Crisp, clean and to the point. Like the background imagery. It's not often you see students taking such a strong stand as this. An overall good piece.

Colorful -- good rendition of logos. Can see the lines a little too much and would downplay the signature line. You spent a lot of time on these and it shows.
Third place
Corbin High School
Chelsea Suttdon
It took two reviews before I saw the "pointless" on the bottom. Your point came across quite well in the cartoon and was also reflected in the editorial. A tough category to compete in!
Single Page Layout

Pike County Central High School
Lana Bellamy
The complete page is very eye catching and has a lot of design elements. Excellent packaging. Be aware that if there are many graphics, the text may be overlooked. The text color is a little difficult to read. Also, watch placement of graphics and try not to break text. The use of word art for the headline, plus the flame graphic, was brilliant. Overall use of graphics and images was great.

Pike County Central High School
Daniel Thacker
Great packaging. Watch art for headline shadowing, can be difficult to read. If the photo is not horizontally stretched when regularly viewing it, make sure it's to scale in print. White text really pops on blank screen and draws readers' eye to it.

Shelley E. Gulley & Tyler Fraser
Terrific photo design. Make sure the images chosen for a page such as "A year to remember" are sharp and have good balance in brightness and contrast. A paper can sometimes look cheesy with colored shapes but this page uses cheesy as an advantage.

Overall page looks good. I like the use of larger photos uptop. Headline could be bigger. I would pull out picture of Cannon and at least put his name under it. Also, bottom blood drive photo seems misplaced. Suggest using a rule to separate stories.
Second place
Paducah Tilghman High School

Lots of content and directions to get there. Great. Stay consistent with captions. One has a gray box behind it.
Third place
Corbin High School
Brad Sears
Nice photo. Way to run it big! I realize you don't have a lot of front page space here but I would consider maximizing your space and maybe having at least two stories on the front. Also, find a new background for teases to inside stories. These look outdated.
Two-Page Layout

Very well laid out and pleasing to the eye. Cute, short, well-written stories. You can feel and sense the excitement as the event draws near. Very good.
Second place
Corbin High School
Madison Barton
Good idea using postcards. Some words were spelled incorrectly (not sure if it was supplied or not proofed.) Like the signatures on the cards and the inverted and non-symmetrical layout. Color would have added some punch. (I nearly disqualified this entry because the school name was entered as CHS on the contest entry blank. Had to search for quite a while to find Corbin on the entry and finally figured out it was from Corbin High. Many schools across the state have the same initials!!)
Third place
Pike County Central High School
Taylor Anderson
Would have been a second but loses on muddiness of cutlines. Would have wanted to know how selected -- popular vote, etc. Good pictures -- shows photographer had an eye for design. Need to recognize them for their work. A good idea but a very tough class to compete in.
Overall Newspaper Design

Overall clean design. Good use of white space. Try bigger photos for more impact on pages. Good layout on front pages with good stories.

Great April Fool's edition! Watch use of white space separating elements and fitting photos to box.
Third place
Fleming County High School

Impact headlines can be very stark -- watch bumping headlines on column pages.
Illustrations/Graphics

Adds to the visualization of what freshmen look like. Nicely done. The knife might be reconsidered for a spoon? Since a spoon is non-threatening. Also, the knife should be shaded in as dark as the fork to stand out better.
Second place
Waggener Traditional High School
Morgan Hunter
Very informative. Consider adding a box around the entire illustration to package it all together more cleanly. Overall step-by-step guide is nicely done -- especially with the comic strip text boxes, which relates to the audience.
Third place
Pike County Central High School

The addition made to Porky is well thought of. Perhaps Porky with another character being careful about making contact would have driven home the information in the text. But the mask is functional and the art looks freehanded, not traced, which is terrific.
