Winners in this category stood out in a field of stories that often left me asking Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? This story was clearly written and conveyed the emotional nature of the subject. Quotes from students about the speech's impact were critical.
Second place
Berea Community High School
Mollie McKeel
The headline definitely got my attention. A larger, more detailed story in this instance would have taken first. Good job conveying the impact of the trips on students.
Third place
Danville High School
Courtney Chumbley
Cleverly written story but would have been better with some perspective from students in the program. Solid info.

Very witty writing piece written in anecdotal style. I laughed out loud. One problem -- the headline was way too long.
Second place
Danville High School
Nick Spann
Good summary of event plus nice quotes. Solid piece.
Third place
Berea Community High School
Mollie McKeel
Good background info on students, each equally represented in opinions and quotes. Very well-rounded report.
Editorial Writing

The topic was appropriate. The writer supported her arguments and explained her concern. However, I would have left off the references to herself. (This was a common issue among all the entries in this category.)
Second place
Berea Community High School
Tabitha Faulconer
This was really more a column than an editorial but that was a common mistake in this category. However, the writing was clear. The issue -- year-long school -- was appropriate and the writer explained some of the advantages. However, the references to "I" made her conclusion less assertive.
Third place
Berea Community High School
Charlsa Hensley
Like the second-place finisher, this was really a column. The topic of school security is a concern all over the country and the writer explains how students can keep the schools more secure. However, the opening was a little slow to get to the real point of his piece.
Review

Danville High School
Erica Knight
Erica captures the mood of the movie and reveals just enough of the plot to entice a viewer. Solid review of acting and no spoilers.
Second place
Danville High School
Jackman Ochs
What can I say? Jackman has convinced me to give a listen to an artist I wouldn't have given a second thought to.
Third place
Nicholas County High School
Adrian Lea
Adrian is both objective and persuasive. Objectivity makes the case because the writer is obviously a fan of the genre and artist.

Good lead but would have made more impact if broken into two shorter paragraphs. Nice job of covering variety of student-athletes. Story transitioned well from individual to individual and kept reader interest. Nice job.
Second place
Berea Community High School
Chase Riddle
Good "underdog" story. Could have been No. 1 with a little more detail. Would liked to have known a little bit more about team but it was well written.
Third place
Danville High School
Shannon Brown
Liked the lead but flow (transition) needs work to keep readers interested. Stronger use of quotes would have helped your story.

Nice job of getting close and in the mix of what was going on. The girl's face/reaction helps show how the students felt about what was going on. Fun picture. Work on adding contrast (cleaner whites and blacks) in photo editing software. Good job. Design note: stand-alone photos should have their own headline.

Good job getting close to the action. Tight crop works well. Work on getting opponents' name and school.

Good job of getting peak action. Clean background. Work on getting opponent's name. Photo would also have worked well as a vertical, cropping out player on right.

Colorful and cute. It is always a good idea to vary type sizes -- make the phone number more dominant.

Nice artwork for such a small space.

W-O-W. The firsthand experience and clear emotional impact sent this entry straight to the top of the stack. Excellent commentary on a very serious issue.

Another clearly written, well-thought out commentary. Something that may have helped this article would be statistics on or examples of what happens with bad writing beyond high school and why good writing is so important.

John Thompson
Short, sweet and to the point. Good use of statistics to back up position.

Very good! Very funny! A true example of an editorial cartoon. I would change the logo and name of TV Guide to prevent possible copyright issues. Very cute.

Gets second only due to difficulty in reading the words. Might type them for easier reading. Good idea -- well executed. Might want to have the cartoonist sign the cartoon.

Little fuzzy to read -- thus a third place. Would liked to have typeset copy on the doors. Good imagery and relates well to editorial. Well thought-out idea. A very strong entry but the field of entries was top-notch.

Track photos are arranged just right. Good job mixing photos with body copy.

Good job creating a nice keepsake. Photos are a good size and the names are eye catching in that font. One question though. Who is the girl in the yellow shirt? Volleyball coach? Name?

Wow! Way to fit a lot of stories on the front page. I might use a rule to separate bumping headlines.

Interesting content. It could have been made a little more clear what you were trying to say -- possibly with a blurb under the headline or a subhead. Also, inside stories should have page numbers.

What a great way to display students' artwork. The layout is clean and does the work justice. I might have moved the box with The Undertow description to the top of the page to allow more room between Haikus and "Unurbanized" cutline.

I like the double opinion page. Neat idea. I would suggest leaving a little more space between elements, moving bylines to first column and making leading consistent.

I like the use of double pages to tackle an issue. I would suggest leaving more space between elements because it's a little cluttered.
Overall Newspaper Design

Very difficult category to judge. This takes first for relevance of stories and appealing features. The pages need more dominant photos. Would like to see more issue coverage. And consistent headline fonts but you need to vary the size.

Would like to have seen, again, some issue coverage. Loved the creativity. Watch the little things -- line up the bottoms of your text columns and try to keep your photos proportional.

Very pretty magazine style. Lots of info graphics with neat numbers. Too little art created by staff. You need to watch putting dark text on dark backgrounds. If it's dark on your screen it will be darker when you print. Tattoo feature looked interesting but I couldn't read because of the background.

Very nice drawing. Since the commentary is talking about Guitar Hero and Rockband it might have been interesting to draw the video games' guitar and drum set instead of a real instrument.

Nice graphic. Very visually interesting. The "driving" doesn't appear to have as much work put into it as "texting" does. Maybe if there were racing stripes or a road/car graphic behind (as a watermark) the word would give more pop. Overall, adds to the page nicely.

Cute bat. The image doesn't really enhance the story; however, it adds a visual appeal. Next time maybe consider drawing something that speaks to the emotions in the story -- say Mrs. Sowers' scared reaction to the bat. Nicely drawn though.
